Biographical Sketch

Saurav Basu is currently working towards his PhD in Image Analysis with Prof. Scott Acton in VIVA. He graduated in 2001 from Jadavpur University in India in Mechanical Engineering, with special interest in computational models in Fluid/Solid Mechanics. He worked as a research staff in the Indian Institute of Science, and in the IT Industry in India before pursuing a Masters Degree in Computer Science. From Aug 2005 to Dec 2005, he was actively engaged in research in Image Segmentation and state-of-the-art Video Tracking applications in Honeywell Labs, Bangalore, India, after which he joined University of Virginia to pursue a PhD. He is interested in Painting and Music, and also served in different positions in Rotaract Clubs in India. Currently, he is actively engaged in societies in UVA that promote Indian Classical Music and other artforms.

Research Interests

Saurav's principal research interest lies in investigating the ways in which differential geometric theories and principles can help 3D Image Segmentation and Advanced Pattern Recognition in higher dimensions. He is interested in developing theories and tools to work in non-linear manifolds in Machine Vision and Pattern Classification. To this end, he is actively engaged in analyzing 3D medical Imaging data (Ultrasound/MRI heart images) and applying differential geometric segmentation procedures. Also, he is working with cell data from fluorescent microscopy to analyze and classify cell population characteristics in higher dimensions. In his Masters degree, he worked in extending the theory of level sets to manifolds with boundaries.
