Biographical Sketch

Alla Aksel is currently a PhD research assistant with the VIVA group, expecting to receive her degree in electrical engineering in May, 2009. In August 2006, Ms. Aksel received her M.S. in electrical engineering. She has served the graduate engineering student council as a vice chair and on the electrical engineering student council as the chair. In May, 2004, Ms. Aksel received her B.S. in Computer Engineering with a minor in Applied Mathematics. She also received second place at the Undergraduate Research Symposium at the University of Virginia Engineering School. She is also fluent in English, Russian and Hebrew

Research Interests

Alla's areas of research include medical ultrasound imaging and speckle reduction for automated ultrasound image processing. Her current interests include utilizing speckle reducing anisotropic diffusion to improve edge detection and segmentation of the myocardium in mice. Furthermore, Ms. Aksel’s also works on bead detection in micro-PIV imaging. Alla's coursework included communication, medical and other image processing, biometrics, signal processing, network optimization and probability and stochastic processes.
